Q. How ‘free’ is free?
A. free.xHarbour.com makes its automated installers available completely free. Meaning, you do not need to pay any fee for the downloads. Its that simple. To get a more understanding on how “free” free-software is, please read “The Free Software Definition” from GNU.org at http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html
Q. What’s the technical difference between these installers and xHarbour.org’s binaries??
A. There is no known difference. We download xHarbour.org’s source code from CVS, and compile it as-is without any changes. We then pack the resulting binaries and libraries in a nice automated installer, for your convenience.
Q. Will I be able to download previous builds of the installers?
A. Yes, for now, we intend to keep previous builds of the installers available for download for minimum 90 days. All depends on what you guys want and what is possible to maintain for us. Lets learn and see how it goes.
Note: Please be advised that we only can support latest builds. Previous builds are there for test purpose only. If you want to go back to a previous release for any reason, its possible, but we can not support previous builds.
Q. What is the added value compared to xHarbour.org’s binaries?
A. Our distributions are based on fully automated installer, thus able to better prepare your working environment. Additionally our installers provides full automation for those wishing to start with xHarbour, from scratch. In other words our installer is smart enough to download and setup your preferred C compiler. Finally our distributions also includes xBuild Wizard, which is the ultimate tool to automate the management of any xBase project you might have.
Q. How often do you release updated installers?
A. Often ;-) We evaluate every changes in xHarbour.org’s changelog daily and try to decide if current CVS code is stable enough for a new update.
Q. I don’t have a C Compiler installed on my computer, which C compiler do you recommend?
A. Though this is kind of a personal preference, I have found that PellesC gives you the smallest memory footprint on your computer while Microsoft Visual C gives your the largest one. Borland C compiler lives in between these two regarding to memory footprint and is the most widely used C compiler with xHarbour. If you don’t want to use either of these above, you can also use xHarbour Builder, xHarbour.com’s commercial distribution of xHarbour. xHarbour Builder comes with its own build in C compiler.
Q. What about Windows 7?
A. We tested latest xHarbour and all free.xharbour.com installers in latest Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit) RC version and all tests went surprisingly well. I must say that WIndows 7 behaved better than Vista in my tests. Much snappier, smoother! ;-)
Q. Where can I get support?
A. Please use xHarbour’s free and open USENET newsgroup comp.lang.xHarbour to ask all your questions regarding the free.xHarbour.com installers or any other question related to the xHarbour compiler and its components.
Q. Where exactly is the end of the internet?
A. According to Google, the end of the internet is right here. ;-)
Q. More questions?
A. f you have more questions, please let us know! I will be happy to answer all questions emailed to free.xHarbour@xHarbour.com. No, sorry, I don’t know anything on female to female relationships,
so nothing I can do to help you on that subject... ;-)
